Like most of us, his early work was focused on developing figurative skills. They were as recognisable to me as if they had belonged in the outhouses of my own family, and aged with us into comfortable familiarity: face powder boxes, conical flasks, vases of cotton flowers, gas lamps and oil cans, pots, jars and bottles, and containers whose function we no longer recognise. Morandi also has provided a wonderful spatial plane at the bottom right. He was well educated in the wonderful considerations in modern painting, and connected to seeking the prime in things. His objects were everywhere, grouped on the tables and under the chairs and gathered together on the floor. He did not choose, as I had always imagined, simply not to paint anything about an object that he did not deem necessary, but instead transformed them beforehand, making them the objects he wanted to see. I admire his discipline and the sophistication of his mature work. He has allowed some distortion but representing the objects is the intent.

The rectangle not only provides structure but is also a plane which seems to come forth. Shown for the first time in Milan, the city of his birth, the film was shot in San Gimignano one year before the artist passed away. Note how we seem to be both level with the goblet and slightly above it at the same time. Can you see the rectangle?

The fresco cycle by Tiepolo dates back towhen the palazzo was bought by Giuseppe Casati, and shows the Stories of Scipio on the walls and the Apotheosis of Scipio on the ceilingwith a celebratory, triumphal iconography.
The three sketches also harmonize with the front of the soaking pan, but are more supportive. His room was set-up for a left-handed man but no one particularly remarked this about the painter. In his painting his considerations are very different. The painting is held together by a large shape in the central area, which integrates the buildings and the foliage beautifully.
The sense of volume and space is wonderful.
